Children's Book Week 2013

Here are a few pics from my Children's Book Week adventures. Above, with some particularly scary librarians and below an amazing audience of 1300 students I spoke to at a morning Book Week assembly. So many kids dressed as their favourite characters.

Me in space in one of the many Read Across the Universe displays created for this week by inventive librarians:

Melbourne Tour

It's Australian Children's Book Week and I've spent the past few days warming up by visiting some amazing schools in Melbourne. We talked story and creative process, I read some of my work-in-progress, we transmedia-brainstormed using Story Scrapbook. Lots of fun.

Here are some pics of my adventures. (And don't forget to enter my Book Week competition to win a free Skype author talk.)

Nice reading tips at Xavier College, Kew.
With magnificent illustrator Dean Gorissen.

Prizes for visiting Monbulk Secondary.

With Sue Beasley, librarian at Monbulk Secondary College
and former Japanese teacher of my friend and it's yr life co-writer Tempany Deckert!

Penleigh and Essendon Grammar students have been taking Book Week's 'Read Across the Universe' theme very seriously with some resourceful rocket-fuelled creations.

And cake. Book Week season is notorious for obscene over-consumption of cake. I'll be documenting my weight gain, raised blood pressure and tooth loss on this blog in coming days. Extraordinary, really, the sacrifices I make to inspire kids to read.

Happy Book Week.

Room to Read Writer Ambassador

I am super-proud to be a Writer Ambassador for the amazing Room to Read. Here is my new flyer for their dynamic Writer Ambassador program (click for full-size PDF). If you don't know about their work building libraries, publishing books and educating girls in some of the world's poorest countries, I hope you'll check out their websites www.roomtoread.org and www.roomtoread.org/australia

Byron Bay Writers Festival

It was Byron Bay Writers Festival this weekend. Sunshine, sea breeze and big, enthusiastic crowds.

I had the chance to work with Children's and Young Adult literary luminaries Libby Gleeson, Phillip Gwynne, Judy Horacek, Leigh Hobbs and Melina Marchetta as well as documentary filmmakers Robin De Crespigny and Mandy Chang and The Rosie Project author Graeme Simsion.

Oh, and slime. I had a chance to work with slime in the kids' tent on Sunday when two kids poured a bucket of the green stuff on my head. Apparently slime is back. Someone suggested on Twitter that slime is the new 'vampires'. Green is the new black.

I looked like an extra in a Ghostbusters movie.

Writing Workshop

It's that time of year when I'm on the road talking books and creativity with kids and teens, hopefully inspiring them to read and to make their own stuff. Here's a collection of pics from recent talks and workshops with stories being created using sand, clay, Story Scrapbook app and even pen and paper.

Sharing my failed teen horror movie project, Within the Woods.
Pics from Bardon Young Writers Week - an intensive week of creativity with 30+ talented young writers:

Testing out my new short story, Freak, on a group of year 8 students.

I managed to sneak into James Foley's brilliant character creation talk at the CYA (Children's and Young Adult) Conference:

And I made this... (Might need a little more work):

And another called Fear of Moose (the name of my band if I ever start one).
