Oldtown Funk

The cult of youth is over. Whippersnappers beware. The elderly are taking back what's theirs. Check out this fantastic do-over of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk video featuring grandpas and grandmas.

Kings Bay Nursing Home Resident & Star of My 'Great Escape' Mockumentary.
I took a similar approach, using local old folks to make my 3-minute mockumentary below, based on short story 'The Great Escape' about a gang of nursing home residents who rise up in the name of freedom.

I think there's something in the air. I think the elderly are secretly planning a hostile takeover of the planet. Keep a sharp eye on your nan and pop.

James Patterson Free Live Event

In his only Australian children’s event, the world’s biggest selling author James Patterson will take the stage at Parramatta Riverside Theatre in an interactive literary show alongside myself and author Martin Chatterton.

I'll be running a session called How To Supercharge Your Writing and bringing my My Life stories and Two Wolves to life. Martin will be illustrating live and giving insight into his collaboration with James on the new Middle School book. And James (he let's me call him that. Or at least I'm sure he will after we meet. But if he's not happy with that kind of familiarity I'm more than okay to stick with 'Mr Patterson' or simply 'Sir') will give students a gigantic boost of bookish energy. Book now:

FREE EVENT perfect for students in Years 3 – 6.

And check out James Patterson's Read Kiddo Read campaign. He's doing lots of good things for kid literacy.

Books Light Up Our World

'Books Light Up Our World' is the theme for Children's Book Week 2015 so I thought I'd share an article by Courtney Tuckett in this month's Haven Magazine. In the piece I share some ideas on how Reading and Creative Writing can light up our world. There are some words of wisdom from author Angela Sunde, too, and that image, for me, really embodies this year's Book Week theme.

Next week, I'll put up a post on my hopes and dreams for Book Week 2015 including the culmination of my Search for a Young Writer and Room to Read World Change Challenge 2015.

My Life Book Tour

I'll be spending March on the road, talking about books, creative writing and how to bust your grandparents out of a nursing home. I'm taking my new book My Life & Other Massive Mistakes (out 2 March) and book trailer to schools around Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

My publisher at Random House reckons it's 30 bookstores, 80 schools, 700 teachers and 30,000 kids, all in four weeks. Fun and frightening at the same time.

A pic from the My Life & Other Massive Mistakes book trailer that I'm currently editing.
It tells the story of pensioner Cliff Weekly's daring escape from Kings Bay Nursing Home.
I'll also be visiting public libraries and Melbourne Children's Book Festival (with Shaun Tan, Gabrielle Wang, Andy Griffiths and Oliver Phommavanh). Keep an eye on the Events page for more details.

Auf wiedersehen (NB: Not touring Germany. I just like the way 'Auf wiedersehen' rolls off the keyboard. Give it a shot.)
